About Us

Our Story

Charter Oak Acoustics started the way most worthwhile things do — with a disagreement. Specifically, a disagreement about whether a particular condenser microphone was worth four hundred dollars or if the marketing department had simply run out of things to do. That argument, held over mediocre coffee in a cluttered home studio, eventually became the editorial philosophy you see on this site today.

We are a team of musicians, engineers, and audio enthusiasts who got tired of reading gear reviews that read like thinly veiled press releases. You know the ones — every product is revolutionary, every update is game-changing, and somehow a pair of twenty-dollar earbuds gets the same breathless treatment as a vintage Neumann. We thought someone should write honestly about this stuff, even if it meant admitting that the emperor occasionally wears no clothes.

What We Actually Do

We review instruments, recording gear, production software, and audio equipment with the kind of candor that comes from actually using these things — in sessions, on stages, in bedrooms converted into studios at two in the morning. Our team tests products in real environments, not in pristine lab conditions that bear no resemblance to where music actually gets made.

Our reviews cover everything from budget-friendly starter kits to professional-grade equipment that costs more than some cars. We do not pretend that expensive always means better, and we do not dismiss affordable gear just because it lacks a prestigious logo. Good sound is good sound, regardless of the price tag.

Our Approach

We believe in three principles that guide everything we publish:

Honesty over access. We would rather write a critical review and lose a manufacturer relationship than mislead our readers. If a product has flaws, we will tell you about them — clearly and specifically.

Context over specs. A frequency response chart tells you something, but it does not tell you how a pair of headphones actually sounds when you are mixing at midnight. We provide the technical details alongside the practical experience.

Substance over hype. The audio world generates more marketing buzzwords per square inch than almost any other industry. We cut through it. If a feature is genuinely useful, we will explain why. If it is marketing fluff, we will say that too.

Who We Write For

Whether you are a bedroom producer assembling your first recording setup, a gigging musician looking for reliable gear, or a seasoned engineer curious about the latest releases — we write for people who care about sound and want straight answers. No affiliate-driven recommendations dressed up as editorial judgment. No sponsored content disguised as reviews. Just honest assessments from people who genuinely care about helping you make good decisions.

If that sounds like the kind of resource you have been looking for, welcome. Pull up a chair, put on some decent headphones, and browse around.
